25 August 2022
Summary
With an increasingly digital workplace, there is a growing threat of cyber-attacks and breaches. This blog shows you the added layers of security Microsoft offer to protect your Microsoft 365 account.
The Microsoft 365 user portal gives you a range of options to ensure that your Microsoft account is as secure as possible.
You can change your password, view and personalise your privacy settings, manage devices, view, and monitor recent sign-in activity, view assigned licences and much, much more.
All of this can be accessed via a single window and helps you to securely manage your account.
How do I access the Microsoft 365 user portal?
Follow the steps below to access the Microsoft 365 user portal:
1. Sign-in to your Microsoft 365 portal via an Internet browser, via: https://www.office365.com
2. Click on the settings icon (top right-hand corner), highlighted in the below image.
3. Then select ‘View Account’, which will take you to the ‘My Account’ area.
3. Once in the ‘My Account’ area you’ll be presented with the below view:
5. Now you have accessed the ‘My Account’ area, you can explore the options to ensure that your Microsoft 365 account is as secure as possible.
How can I make my Microsoft 365 account more secure?
The most important step you can take to make sure your Microsoft 365 account stays secure is to update your security information.
If you navigate to the ‘Security info‘ tile and select ‘Update Info’, you’ll be presented with the methods that you use to sign into your account or reset your password.
We recommend adding a mobile phone and alternative email address to your sign in methods, just in case you forget your password. You will receive verification code texts or phone calls via the specified phone number – a great added layer of security to keep your account and devices secure!
Within the Security info area, there is also the option to sign out of all devices. This is a great security feature to make use of if you sign into your Microsoft 365 on multiple devices and one of your devices is unfortunately lost or stolen.
Additional Information
Besides your normal log in credentials i.e. email and password, Microsoft offer users additional layers of authentication through such security channels, such as MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication).
Take a look at a previous blog, which explains how to set up MFA – This option includes receiving verification code texts or phone calls via a specified phone number, using an Authenticator application and lastly if set up, using an application password.
