How to create breakout rooms in Microsoft Teams meetings

Summary

Microsoft Teams has a feature called breakout rooms and these rooms are perfect for organisations that require split group discussions, without leaving the original meeting.

With breakout rooms, organisers can create multiple, separate spaces within a meeting, each serving as a dedicated room for a subset of participants. These rooms can be used for activities such as brainstorming, group work, problem-solving, or in-depth discussions on specific topics.

Breakout rooms can be particularly useful in scenarios where large meetings or training sessions involve a diverse range of topics or require individualized attention.

In this blog, we’ll show you how to create a breakout room and assign participants, both before and during the meeting.

How do I create breakout rooms in Microsoft Teams?

Organisers can make breakout rooms before or during an online meeting. If you’re a meeting organiser, you can assign people manually or automatically to breakout rooms. You can also manually move people to another breakout room during a meeting.

Only meeting organisers and presenters can create breakout rooms in a Teams meeting. If you wish to create a breakout room, contact the meeting organiser to assign you the Breakout rooms manager role.

Follow the steps below to create Microsoft Teams breakout rooms before or during a meeting:

Before the meeting

1. Open the meeting invite in your Teams calendar.

2. Click Breakout rooms.

3. Choose Create rooms.

4. Select how many breakout rooms you want.

5. Click Add rooms.

6. Click Assign participants.

7. Choose whether to assign participants Automatically or Manually to breakout rooms.

During the meeting

1. Click the breakout rooms icon on the top left section.

How do I manually assign people to breakout rooms?
